4 Ways for Fiction Writers to Use AI
Part 2 in Our Series, Exploring AI as an Author
We already featured some tips in our first blog post in this series: How AI can Help Write Your Book. In this blog post, we continue on the theme, specifically with fiction authors in mind.
AI has been a divisive topic in the publishing industry since its innovation, igniting debates over the ethics of AI-generated novels. At Aaxel Author Group, we value writing as a skill that evolves through years of passionate dedication to the craft. Storytelling is a human art form, with the power to inspire across centuries through the written word. While we don’t recommend relying on AI to write the entirety of your book, AI can be an exceptional resource to support writers when used responsibly. Some useful AI tools for authors include Chat GPT, Sudowrite, and Character AI.
Here are some ways writers can implement AI tools in their writing process:
1. Finding Synonyms and Rewording Suggestions:
Sometimes the word you’re looking for is on the tip of your tongue, but you just can’t find the right word. Utilizing AI tools using a prompt such as, “list 5 synonyms for ‘intriguing’ that begin with C” can help you save time otherwise spent searching through a thesaurus, finding everything but the exact term you need. Chat GPT can be a great support for this!
2. Novel Ideas and Scene Prompts:
Stuck on where to start your novel, or need suggestions for the events of a scene? Escape the purgatory of writer’s block by using AI as a tool for inspiration. You can ask for a list of ideas for a dystopian sci-fi novel, or unexpected plot twist ideas to work into a scene—the possibilities are endless! Sudowrite and Chat GPT are great AI tools to help get you started with scene prompts and novel ideas.
3. Character Analysis and Development:
Want a secondary perspective on how an audience may conceive of your characters? You can prompt AI with a general description of your character (we don’t recommend pasting your original writing into AI, as some models may train on user content), and ask for an analysis. You could ask AI to provide feedback on a character’s name and give an explanation on traits readers may associate with the name. This can give you insight into how readers may perceive your character based on their description and highlight traits and flaws you may not have considered. AI tools such as Character AI can offer insight on character development.
4. Crafting Author Bios:
Most podcasters will ask you to have a semi-professional external microphone rather than relying on the built-in one on your PC. The sound quality from an external microphone is simply better. Same thing with audio—wear a headset to minimize any echoing effect. Finally, make sure all potential disruptions are eliminated: store away your phone and other electronic devices that could make sounds (or ring!). Make sure any other devices that add ambient noise that can be picked up by your microphone (such as an air conditioner) are turned off during your session. We once were part of a podcast and we could clearly hear a dishwasher changing cycles coming from one of the other speakers’ audio feeds.
In this age of digital development, AI is rapidly becoming a popular topic of conversation. When used responsibly, AI can be a helpful tool for writers, whether you’re finishing a manuscript or just getting started.
